Description
🌿 15 European Spindle Seeds (Euonymus europaeus)
The European Spindle, also called Witch's Cap, Priest's Cap, Square Wood or Spindle Wood, Common Spindle-tree (in English), is a native shrub with an elegant silhouette, highly valued for its bright autumn colors, known for its pink capsules revealing bright orange seeds.
This hardy shrub, which can reach 3 to 5 meters tall, is a perennial plant that plays an important role in local ecosystems by feeding birds and promoting biodiversity. It is ideal for country hedges, border gardens, or diverse reforestation projects.
Usage:
The Spindle is used both for its ornamental and ecological qualities. It attracts garden helpers and is an excellent choice for a free hedge, a natural border, or a wild planting. Warning, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, especially the fruits.
Highly appreciated by birds for its berries (toxic to humans), it contributes to the natural regeneration of hedges and edges.
Growing tips:
-
Sowing: in spring, seeds require an essential cold stratification of 2 to 3 months (moist sand mixture + refrigerator or autumn outdoor sowing).
-
Planting: in well-drained, calcareous or neutral soil, in partial shade to sunny exposure.
-
Maintenance: slow growth, tolerates light pruning and harsh climatic conditions well. Very hardy once established.
Associations:
Its foliage takes on magnificent red hues in autumn. It can be associated with other native shrubs such as dogwood, blackthorn, or hawthorn to form wild hedges attractive to wildlife.
Symbolism & benefits:
The Spindle symbolizes resilience and creativity (its wood was used to make charcoal pencils). It is also associated with transformation, notably through its spectacular colors at the end of the season.
It is a local species, valuable for biodiversity.
