Pyracantha coccinea – also known as Firethorn, Firethorn, Pyracantha, or Fire of Paradise, is a highly valued ornamental shrub for its colorful berries and its ability to form defensive hedges. Native to Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, it charms with its spring flowering and abundance of decorative fruits in autumn.

Plant characteristics:
A perennial plant with evergreen foliage, the Firethorn can reach 3 to 4 meters in height. Its thorny branches bear small white honey-producing flowers in spring, followed by red, orange, or yellow berries very attractive to birds. Ideal as a free hedge or espalier against a wall, it also provides shelter for biodiversity.

Usage:
Mainly used for ornamentation, natural protection, and welcoming wildlife (pollinators, birds). The berries, although decorative, are toxic to humans in large quantities. It is sometimes attributed a symbolic use of courage and protection.

Planting tips:

• Cold stratification recommended for 1 to 3 months before sowing.

• Sow seeds on the surface of a light potting mix, then cover lightly.

• Keep moist and at a temperature of 18-20°C until germination (which can be slow).

• Potting in a small container then transplanting into the ground after rooting.

• Prefers well-drained soil, even calcareous, and a sunny to semi-shaded exposure.

Hardy perennial, tolerates temperatures down to -15°C.
Can be grown as a bonsai with regular pruning.

Garden associations:

Pairs well with other rustic shrubs: wild roses, dogwoods, elderberries, or hawthorns, to form a living and nourishing hedge.
