Pyracantha coccinea

Firethorn, fire thorn, pyracantha: its botanical name comes from the Greek pyr akantha, “fire thorn,” and perfectly sums up its character — fearsomely thorny branches and an explosion of orange-red berries that light up the garden in the middle of winter, when everything else has gone dark.

Characteristics:

• Flamboyant berries: red, orange, or yellow depending on the plant, they persist from autumn through the heart of winter.
• Bee-friendly flowering: a cloud of small white flowers in spring, heavily visited by pollinators.
• Evergreen foliage: glossy green year-round, on a shrub reaching 3 to 4 metres.
• Hardy: it tolerates temperatures down to -15 °C and regrows well after pruning.

Precautions:

• Its branches bear long, sharp thorns: wear thick gloves and safety glasses when pruning, and avoid planting it alongside a narrow passageway or play area.
• The berries are not edible and cause digestive problems if ingested. Keep them out of reach of young children, who are attracted by their bright colour.

Sowing advice:

• Exposure: full sun to partial shade.
• Soil: ordinary, well-drained soil, including chalky or poor soil. This is a remarkably tolerant shrub that accepts both dry soils and compacted urban ground. No fertilisation needed.
• Method: cold stratification for 1 to 3 months is recommended. Then sow on the surface of a light potting mix and cover lightly. Keep moist at 18-20 °C: germination can be slow.

Planting advice:

• Transplant into a pot, then into the ground once rooted, as a hedge (80 cm spacing) or trained against a wall, where it creates a spectacular effect.

Care advice:

• Prune after flowering, never in winter: otherwise you would remove the berries. Tip: the fruit forms on two-year-old wood, so do not cut everything back each year.

Harvesting your own seeds:
