600 Dame's Rocket Seeds (Hesperis matronalis)
Description
Dame's Rocket – Hesperis matronalis (600 seeds)
Also called "Purple Rocket", "Hesperide" or "Vesper", Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) is a hardy and elegant plant highly prized in cottage gardens for its sweet fragrance and subtle shades, ranging from pale mauve to white. Native to Europe, it has been appreciated since the Middle Ages for its generous flowering and honey-producing ability.
Growing tips:
Dame's Rocket is a short-lived biennial to perennial plant, easy to grow. Sow from March to May directly in place or in a nursery for flowering the following year. It prefers cool, well-drained soils and a sunny to partly shaded exposure.
Water moderately, without excess. To prolong flowering, remove faded flowers.
Perennial : Yes, often grown as a biennial. It can self-seed spontaneously.
Stratification : Seeds may require cold stratification (2 to 4 weeks in the refrigerator) for optimal germination.
Germination : in 10 to 20 days at 15–20 °C.
Uses:
Its sweet scent, close to lilac in the evening, makes it an ideal plant near windows or passageways. It is perfect in beds, borders, wildflower meadows, or natural gardens. Its flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Edible in small quantities, especially to decorate salads.
Recommended pairings:
Goes well with foxgloves, bellflowers, cornflowers, knapweeds, poppies, and nigellas. It can also serve as a background for lower and more colorful plants.
Symbolism:
Dame's Rocket is traditionally associated with fidelity and discreet beauty. It was once offered to women as a tribute to their natural grace.
