The Spanish barberry, also known as the barberry thorn, Spanish barberry thorn, or Berberis hispanica ( Berberis vulgaris hispanica ), is a spiny shrub native to the Mediterranean basin. Valued both for its tart red berries and its decorative foliage, it fits equally well in a free hedge, a shrub bed, or at the edge of a forest garden. This honey plant attracts bees and is beneficial to biodiversity.

The berries of the barberry are appreciated for their tangy taste and medicinal properties. 

Growing tips:

• Plant type : Perennial shrub, very hardy.

• Sowing : In autumn or spring after  cold stratification 2 to 3 months in the refrigerator to break dormancy.

• Exposure : Sun or partial shade.

• Soil : Slightly calcareous, well-drained.

• Maintenance : Moderate watering. Tolerates pruning well.

The barberry is a protective plant often associated with country hedges, useful for sheltering beneficial wildlife.
