Also called Constantinople Acacia, Silk Tree, or Night Mimosa, Albizia julibrissin is a small ornamental tree with an elegant habit, appreciated for its silky pink flowers and finely divided foliage. It brings an exotic and elegant touch to gardens with its light foliage reminiscent of ferns. Native to Asia (Iran, China, Japan), it has become established in many Mediterranean gardens.

This deciduous tree can reach 5 to 10 meters in height at maturity. Its spectacular, very nectar-rich flowering attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators throughout the summer. Its foliage closes at night or in cloudy weather.

Uses:

The Silk Tree is mainly grown for its decorative aspect. It can be planted alone, in a row, or as a central feature in a garden. 

Highly appreciated for its light shade and its ability to attract bees and butterflies.

Growing tips:

• Perennial and hardy down to -12 °C once well established.

• Requires cold stratification (strongly recommended) for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing, or soak the seeds for 24h in lukewarm water.

• Sow the seeds in spring in a light, well-draining potting soil, in full light.

• Transplant outdoors after the last frosts, in a sunny location.

• Moderate watering to be spaced out once the plant is established.

• Flowering from June to August, silky pink and fragrant flowers.

Associations:

Goes well with ornamental grasses, lavenders, agapanthus, or yuccas.

Symbolism:
