Description
Rhubarb, halfway between a vegetable and a fruit, is a perennial plant with a tangy taste that finds its place in many desserts and culinary preparations. Here is everything you need to know about growing and using rhubarb:
Description of Rhubarb:
- Rhubarb is a very easy-to-grow perennial legume. Its petioles, also called stalks, are appreciated for their tangy flavor, ideal for making jams, compotes, pies, or crumbles. They can also accompany meat or fish dishes.
- In addition to its delicious taste, rhubarb is rich in vitamins, especially vitamins B and C, as well as minerals.
- This plant is very hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -20 °C. However, it does not particularly like high heat, so a semi-shaded location is preferable.
- If you decide to grow rhubarb in a pot, make sure to place it in a warm spot, such as a greenhouse or a conservatory, until spring is well established.
Growing Tips:
- Rhubarb can be planted in spring or autumn in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
- For better germination, you can soak the seeds in water overnight before sowing, or proceed beforehand with a cold stratification.
- Rhubarb plants require regular watering, especially during dry periods. However, avoid excess water to prevent root rot.
- The harvest of petioles can begin from the second year after planting.
