15 Musquée de Provence Pumpkin Seeds (Cucurbita moschata)
Description
Musquée Squash of Provence
(Cucurbita moschata) – Also called: Nutmeg squash, Winter Musquée
The Musquée Squash of Provence (Cucurbita moschata) is an old and highly valued variety for its sweet, dense, and fragrant flesh. Originating from southern France, this squash is particularly suited to hot, dry climates but can also be grown in other regions with good sunlight.
This annual creeping plant produces beautiful ribbed fruits of bronze-orange color at maturity, generally weighing between 5 and 10 kg. Its orange, tender, and flavorful flesh makes it a highly prized variety in cooking, especially for soups, purees, gratins, and autumn desserts.
Highly appreciated in family gardens, the Musquée Squash of Provence stores well after harvest and holds up excellently when cooked.
Planting tips:
-
Sow seeds in pots in spring (April-May), under cover, or directly in the ground after the last frosts.
-
Provide rich, well-drained soil and a location in full sun. Space plants 1 to 1.5 meters apart.
-
Regular watering, without excess, avoiding wetting the foliage to reduce disease risks. Mulching recommended to retain moisture and limit weeds.
-
No stratification needed: germination is quick in warm conditions (20-25°C).
🌾 Note:
The fruits can weigh up to 10 kg and can be easily stored for several months in a dry, airy place. Their flavor improves over time! A classic for autumn and winter.
Garden associations:
-
Pairs well with corn, pole beans ("milpa" cultivation), as well as nasturtiums which repel harmful insects.
Symbolism:
-
Symbol of abundance, summer warmth, and generosity, the Musquée Squash evokes fertility and the culinary traditions of the Provençal region.
