Description
The Butternut squash, also known as Doubeurre, is a highly appreciated squash variety in France. Originating from America, it has adapted to different climates, both in the south and north of France. Here is what you need to know about this delicious squash:
Description:
- The Butternut squash is a trailing plant, but it can also climb depending on the cultivation method used. It is advisable to allow about 1 meter spacing between plants to ensure optimal development.
- It is a storage squash, which can easily last through the winter in a well-ventilated place around 15°C.
- The flesh of the Butternut squash is bright orange, very firm, with a subtly sweet and musky taste, reminiscent of the softness of tender butter. It is low in calories (20 kcal/100g) but rich in vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, fiber, and antioxidant carotenoids.
- It can be cooked in many ways, making it very versatile in the kitchen.
Growing Tips:
- Butternut squash requires very rich and well-drained soil. It is recommended to add plenty of compost over the entire planting bed to promote its growth.
- Full sun exposure is necessary to enjoy the maximum possible warmth.
