Other known names: Jezo Spruce, Hokkaido Spruce , Yezo Spruce (in English), Japanese Spruce, Ezo-matsu. 

The Japanese spruce is a majestic conifer native to northern Japan and Sakhalin Island. Valued for its slender form and bluish-green needles, it is widely used in forestry for the quality of its wood, but also for ornamenting large gardens and parks.

This perennial species can reach 30 to 50 meters in height at maturity in its natural habitat, and it has excellent hardiness (down to -30°C), resistant to very low winter temperatures.

🌱 Use:

The Japanese spruce is mainly cultivated for its wood, used in carpentry and papermaking. It can also be a beautiful street tree or an effective windbreak in cold regions. Its dense foliage shelters many bird species.

Resistant, it is also highly appreciated for its cultivation as a bonsai.

🌿 Planting tips:

• The seeds must have cold stratification 6 to 8 weeks before sowing to promote germination.

• Then sow them in pots or a nursery in spring, in a light and well-drained soil.

• Keep moist but not excessive, and place in partial shade until germination.
