Also called Chinese Judas Tree, Sichuan Redbud, or Cercis chinensis, the Chinese Redbud is a small deciduous ornamental tree prized for its spectacular spring bloom. Native to Asia, it adorns itself in early spring with a multitude of purplish-pink flowers directly on the branches, even before the leaves appear.

A slow-growing perennial plant, the Chinese Redbud reaches about 3 to 5 meters in height at maturity, forming a beautiful rounded silhouette. It is appreciated in gardens for its elegant habit, heart-shaped leaves, and hardiness.

Cultivation tips

Seeds require cold stratification to break their natural dormancy. Place them in moist sand or damp paper towel in the refrigerator (2 to 5°C) for 2 to 3 months. Then sow in pots or directly in the ground, 1 cm deep. Keep the substrate slightly moist and place in a bright location.

The tree prefers cool but well-drained soils, slightly acidic to neutral. Its growth is slow but steady.
