Dendrocalamus giganteus
Giant bamboo, dragon bamboo: it is simply the largest bamboo species in the world, capable of reaching 30 metres in height, with culms up to 20 cm in diameter. Its growth is among the fastest in the plant kingdom: during the peak growing season and in a favourable climate, a shoot can grow several dozen centimetres per day. Good news for gardeners: it is a clump-forming, non-running species that forms dense clumps and does not invade the surrounding area.

Non-running: unlike bamboos with running rhizomes, it grows in a compact clump and stays where it is planted.

Spectacular growth: ideal for quickly creating hedges, windbreaks or decorative structures in large gardens.

Useful culms: its strong canes are used in construction and crafts.
Precautions:
- Tropical species: it cannot tolerate frost and cannot be grown outdoors in the ground in mainland France, except with permanent protection in a heated shelter. Plan to grow it in a large container that can be overwintered in a greenhouse or conservatory, where it will remain much smaller than in its native habitat.
- Allow for its mature size if planting it in a suitable climate: this is a giant, not a balcony bamboo.
Sowing advice:

Position: full sun to partial shade, with plenty of light and warmth.

Soil: rich, deep, cool to moist and well drained. This plant has a very high demand for water and nutrients: compost-enriched soil and high ambient humidity are essential. It does not tolerate dry, poor soil.

Care advice:
- Water regularly and generously, especially when grown in a pot. Mist the foliage in dry conditions.
- Adding compost in spring supports its rapid growth.

- It is one of the plants that sequesters carbon most rapidly, thanks to its exceptional growth rate.

- Hedges, windbreaks, plant screens and shade in large gardens in warm climates. Its canes are used to make furniture, trellises, stakes and structures.
Symbolism:
In Asia, bamboo symbolises integrity and resilience: it bends in the storm but does not break. It is one of the “Four Gentlemen” of traditional Chinese painting, alongside the orchid, plum blossom and chrysanthemum.
