Giant bamboo, dragon bamboo: it is quite simply the largest bamboo species in the world, capable of reaching 30 metres in height, with culms up to 20 cm in diameter. Its growth is among the fastest in the plant kingdom: during the peak season and in a favourable climate, a shoot can grow several dozen centimetres per day. Good news for gardeners: it is a clumping, non-running species that forms clumps and does not invade the garden.

Characteristics:

• Non-running: unlike bamboos with spreading rhizomes, it grows in a compact clump and stays where it is planted.
• Spectacular growth: ideal for quickly creating hedges, windbreaks or decorative structures in large gardens.
• Useful culms: its sturdy canes are used in construction and crafts.

Precautions:

• Tropical species: it does not tolerate frost and cannot be grown in the ground in mainland France, except in permanent heated shelter. Plan to grow it in a large container to overwinter in a greenhouse or conservatory, where it will remain much smaller than in its native habitat.
• Allow for its mature spread if you plant it in a suitable climate: this is a giant, not a balcony bamboo.

Sowing advice:

• Exposure: full sun to partial shade, with plenty of light and warmth.
• Soil: rich, deep, cool to moist and well drained. This is a very demanding plant when it comes to water and nutrients: compost-enriched soil and high ambient humidity are essential. It dislikes dry, poor soils, however.
• Method: no cold stratification — this tropical seed needs constant warmth. Soak it for 12 to 24 hours in lukewarm water, then sow it 1 cm deep in a substrate kept moist at 25–30 °C. Bamboo seeds quickly lose their germination ability: sow them promptly. See how to sow your seeds.

Care advice:

• Water regularly and generously, especially when grown in a pot. Mist the foliage in dry air.
• Adding compost in spring supports its rapid growth.

• It is one of the plants that sequester carbon most rapidly, thanks to its exceptional growth rate.

Uses:

• Hedges, windbreaks, plant screens and shade in large gardens in warm climates. Its canes are used to make furniture, trellises, stakes and structures.

Symbolism:
In Asia, bamboo symbolises uprightness and resilience: it bends in a storm but does not break. It is one of the “Four Noble Plants” in traditional Chinese painting, alongside the orchid, plum blossom and chrysanthemum.
