Louisiana Cypress

(Taxodium distichum) – also called Bald Cypress, Cypress Bald, Swamp Cypress, Pond Cypress, Taxaudier, or Cipre.

Majestic and emblematic of the southern U.S. bayous, the Louisiana Cypress is a unique deciduous conifer. 

Adapted to temperate climates, it is valued for its finely divided foliage, fiery autumn colors, and remarkable ability to grow in waterlogged or even submerged soils.

A hardy perennial plant, the Louisiana Cypress can reach over 20 meters in height. It is distinguished by its "pneumatophores," characteristic aerial roots that allow it to breathe even in swampy terrain.

Uses:

A spectacular ornamental plant when grown alone or along water edges, it adds a touch of exoticism and poetry to any wet garden.

It is also used in agroforestry for its tolerance to difficult soils and for its rot-resistant wood. It attracts birds and contributes to local biodiversity.

Very interesting as a bonsai for fans of sculptural forms.

Planting tips:

• Sow seeds in spring after cold stratification for 2 to 3 months (in the refrigerator, in moist sand).

• Sow in pots under cover or directly in the ground, 1 cm deep, at 20-25°C.

• Sunny to partial shade exposure.

• Regular watering, especially during germination.

This conifer prefers acidic to neutral, deep and cool soils, but also tolerates flood-prone areas.

• Pairs well with the Black Alder, Purple Loosestrife, or Swamp Iris.
