60 Seeds of Soapwort (Saponaria vaccaria)
Description
Common Soapwort (Saponaria vaccaria), also known as Red Soapwort, Soapweed, Soap Herb, Cowherb Soapwort or Vaccaria, is a hardy annual plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. Cultivated for centuries for its ornamental flowers and traditional uses, it attracts both biodiversity lovers and curious gardeners.
This melliferous plant produces pretty pale pink to bright pink flowers that attract butterflies and pollinators throughout the summer. Historically, its seeds and roots were used for their saponifying properties, hence its name: a decoction could be used to wash delicate fabrics.
It is now cultivated for its rustic beauty and amazing virtues.
🌿 Usage:
-
Formerly used as a soap plant: its leaves and roots, rich in saponins, produce a natural foam.
-
Highly appreciated in cut flowers thanks to its long vase life.
-
Attracts bees and pollinators, ideal for melliferous gardens.
Growing tips:
Sow directly in place in spring, after the last frosts, in light, well-drained soil and full sun. Water moderately. Soapwort requires no stratification: its seeds germinate easily under good conditions.
Although mainly annual, it often self-seeds spontaneously from year to year, contributing to a living and self-sustaining garden.
🤝 Plant associations:
It pairs very well with cornflowers, poppies, nigellas or even chamomile, for a wild and balanced effect. Perfect for borders, flower beds, or wildflower meadows.
✨ Symbolism:
Soapwort is often associated with purity, simplicity, and domestic virtues, due to its ancestral use for natural laundry.
