250 Black Sorghum Seeds (Sorghum nigrum)
Description
Black Sorghum – Sorghum nigrum
250 seeds – Ancient and ornamental variety
Plant characteristics:
Black sorghum is an ancient cereal originating from Africa, an annual with rapid growth that can reach up to 2 meters in height. Its upright, purple to black stems bear long leaves and dark panicles that are particularly decorative at the end of the season. It is cultivated both for its starch-rich seeds and for its structuring power in a planting bed.
Uses:
Sorghum seeds can be processed into flour, puffed grains, or fermented for traditional drinks in some cultures. Black grains can be used for animal feed.
In ornamental gardening, its dark stalks add a remarkable graphic touch. The decorative panicles are prized in dried bouquets.
It is also an interesting plant in permaculture for biomass and soil structuring, due to its root system which gives it some resistance to drought. Excellent summer ground cover, useful in crop rotations.
Growing tips:
Sow directly in the ground in spring, after the last frosts, or in pots from March-April under cover. Bury the seeds 1-2 cm deep in warmed soil. Sorghum prefers sunny exposures and well-drained soils. Water moderately: this plant tolerates drought very well.
No stratification is necessary. The full cycle lasts about 4 to 5 months.
Beneficial associations:
• To be grown with legumes (such as beans or peas) that enrich the soil, or near nectar-producing flowers to promote general pollination in the garden.
• Can serve as a natural support for light climbers.
Symbolism:
Sorghum, especially in its black form, is often seen as a symbol of resilience, adaptation to arid environments, and a link between agricultural traditions and biodiversity.
Other names:
• Black grain sorghum
• Sorghum bicolor subsp. nigrum
• Black African sorghum
