Seeds for poor and dry soil: what to sow and grow?

Many gardeners give up when they discover that their soil is dry, rocky, sandy, or depleted. However, nature is full of plants capable of adapting to these difficult conditions. The key is to choose your seeds well and trust the resilience of hardy varieties.

At SemiSauvage Permaculture, we have selected robust plants, water-efficient, ideal for starting a vegetable garden even on poor soil. Here are some suggestions, along with tips to naturally improve your soil over the seasons.

🥕 Drought-resistant vegetables

🟢 Carrots for light soil
Varieties like the Carotte Rouge Sang or the Carotte Parisienne grow very well in sandy soils. They can withstand drought after sprouting if mulched.

🟢 Yellow Straw Onion
A rustic classic, not demanding once rooted. Ideal for dry summer climates.

🟢 Swiss chard
The Colorful Swiss Chard Mix or the Red Rhubarb produce even in difficult conditions, with a beautiful visual effect.

🟢 Hardy radishes
Try the Black Winter Round Radish or the Half-Long Radish, which tolerate compact soils and infrequent watering well.

🟢 Chickpeas or dry beans
Although we do not currently offer chickpeas, you can choose our varieties of Rustic Beans like Dwarf Beans or experiment with Russel Dwarf Lupin as a nitrogen-fixing green manure.

A miracle plant for bees and your soil. It grows quickly and protects exhausted soils.

🟢 White mustard
Very effective for structuring tired soils.

🟢 Sainfoin, buckwheat, savory?
No sainfoin currently, but Perennial Savory or Common Burnet are water-efficient and useful melliferous plants.

🌸 Hardy flowers and aromatics

🟢 Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
Very hardy, it blooms generously even without fertilizer.

🟢 Dwarf nasturtium
An excellent companion plant that attracts aphids away from sensitive crops.

🟢 Thyme, Oregano, Savory
These Mediterranean aromatics Thyme, Oregano, Savory are made for rocky and dry soils. They scent the garden while feeding pollinators.

🟢 Nigella, Poppy, Poppies
Hardy flowers, undemanding, ideal for beautifying a poor embankment. See: Spanish Nigella, California Poppy, Wild Poppy.

🔧 Improve poor soil naturally

Even if you start with water-efficient plants, think about gradually regenerating your soil:

Add compost on the surface each season, without turning the soil.
Mulch generously, even with simple grass clippings or leaves.
Alternate crops: legumes, root vegetables, green manure…
Promote soil biodiversity (fungi, worms, microfauna) to start a virtuous cycle.
