Nemophila maculata

Spotted nemophila, five-spot: this latter name, originating in California, where it comes from, perfectly describes its signature — each of its five white petals bears a single dark violet spot at its tip, like five dots painted on with a brush. A surprisingly precise pattern for a wildflower.

Characteristics:

• Graphic flowers: white corollas marked with five violet spots, creating a very clean design.
• Ground-covering growth: 20 to 30 cm tall, it forms pretty flowering carpets that spread gently.
• Fast flowering: little time passes between sowing and the first flower, making it ideal for impatient or beginner gardeners.

Sowing advice:

• Exposure: sunny or partially shaded — in hot regions, partial shade prevents it from scorching in midsummer.
• Soil: light, cool and well-drained. It is a Californian coastal meadow plant: it appreciates cool conditions and suffers from prolonged drought, while not tolerating waterlogged soil.

• Water lightly until emergence, then moderately but regularly: drying out significantly shortens its flowering period.

Beneficial combinations:
