Festuca glauca
Blue fescue: this distinctive silvery blue is not a pigment but a fine layer of wax covering the leaves—a protection against evaporation, inherited from its rocky origins. The poorer the soil and the brighter the exposure, the more intense the color: this is a plant that neglect makes more beautiful.
Characteristics:
-
Evergreen foliage: fine silvery-blue needles forming regular, rounded clumps that remain decorative all year round.
-
Highly resilient: it withstands drought without flinching and is content with poor soils.
-
Compact growth: 20 to 30 cm, ideal for adding structure without taking up too much space.
Sowing advice:
-
Exposure: full sun is essential—in shade, the foliage turns green and loses all its ornamental appeal.
-
Soil: poor, dry, sandy, or stony, and above all very well drained. Key point: rich or damp soil is fatal to it and makes its blue color disappear. Never add amendments, and in heavy soil, plant on a mound or incorporate gravel.
-
Method: sow in spring or autumn, directly in the ground, barely covering the seeds. No soaking or stratification. See how to sow your seeds.
Care advice:
- Comb through the clumps by hand in spring to remove dry leaves rather than cutting them back.
- Divide the clumps every 3 years: they tend to become sparse in the center as they age.
- No watering once established—this is the ultimate water-wise garden plant.
Beneficial combinations:
Benefits for biodiversity:
- Its dense, evergreen clumps provide welcome winter shelter for beneficial insects and small soil-dwelling wildlife.
- Its seeds feed small seed-eating birds if the flower spikes are left in place in autumn.
Uses:
- Rock gardens, borders, ground cover, containers, or gravel gardens: it adds a graphic, contemporary touch to landscaping.
Harvesting your own seeds:
Leave the flower spikes to turn golden and dry on the plant at the end of summer, then rub them between your fingers over a container to release the seeds. Blue fescue sometimes self-seeds among gravel as well. See how to store your seeds.
