Leptosiphon androsaceus (syn. Linanthus androsaceus)

California belle, leptosiphon, linanthus, mountain phlox: this little annual from the hills of California produces a myriad of tiny star-shaped flowers in pastel shades — white, pink, yellow, and apricot — borne on foliage so fine that only the flowers can be seen. A spontaneous meadow effect achieved in just a few weeks.

Characteristics:

• Pastel mix: a cloud of small star-shaped flowers in white, pink, yellow, and apricot, from May to September.
• Light growth habit: 20 to 40 cm, with very finely divided foliage that creates an airy texture.
• Easy annual: fast growth and generous flowering, with no particular difficulty.

Sowing advice:

• Exposure: full sun or light partial shade.
• Soil: light, well-drained, and rather poor — absolutely avoid overly rich soils, which produce exuberant foliage and few flowers. No fertilization.
• Method: no stratification required. Sow in place from March to June, or in pots from February under cover. Please note that it is sensitive to frost: do not sow too early outdoors. See how to sow your seeds.

Care advice:

• Water moderately. Stagger sowings to extend flowering through September.

Beneficial combinations:

• Its tiny open-corolla flowers are accessible to small pollinators with short tongues, often overlooked by large flowers: hoverflies, tiny bees, and butterflies.

• Flower beds, rock gardens, planters, wildflower meadow mixes, and country-style borders. An excellent choice for quickly revegetating bare areas and for wildflower bouquets.
