Taxus baccata

If common, if noble, tree of death: it is probably the oldest tree in Europe. Some yews in British churchyards are over 2,000 years old, and their ability to regenerate from within, forming new stems from a hollow trunk, has earned them a reputation for immortality. Its wood, both dense and flexible, was used to make the fearsome English longbows.

Characteristics:

• Evergreen foliage: dark green, flat and flexible needles, forming a very dense habit.
• Red arils: in autumn, female plants bear small, fleshy, bright red fruits that are highly ornamental.
• Exceptional longevity: slow-growing, but it can live for over 1,000 years and reach 15 to 20 metres.
• Topiary king: it tolerates severe pruning and even regrows from old wood, unlike most conifers.

Precautions — please read carefully:

• All parts of the plant are highly toxic, except for the red flesh of the aril — needles, bark, wood, and especially the black seed enclosed in the heart of the aril, which is extremely toxic. Ingestion can be serious.
• Do not plant it in a garden frequented by young children: the red, sweet arils are tempting, and the danger comes from the seed they contain.
• Highly toxic to livestock and horses, even in the form of dry branches or pruning waste: never plant it near pasture, and dispose carefully of all pruning residues.
• Wear gloves when pruning and wash your hands afterwards. Clearly label your seed packets.

Sowing advice:

• Exposure: partial shade or full sun; it is one of the few conifers that thrives in dense shade.
• Soil: well-drained, calcareous or neutral, cool and rich in humus. Above all, it dislikes stagnant moisture, which causes its roots to rot. No fertilisation is necessary.
• Method: be patient. Cold stratification for 3 to 6 months is essential (between 1 and 5 °C, in damp sand). Then sow in pots or directly in the ground in spring or autumn. Germination is slow and often takes place over two years.

Planting advice:

• Transplant as a hedge (50 cm spacing), as a topiary, or as a standalone specimen, away from grazing and play areas.
• Its slow growth and tolerance of pruning make it a highly prized bonsai subject — see our guide creating a bonsai from a seed.

Care advice:

• Water regularly during the first few years. Prune at the end of summer for a neat hedge, systematically collecting all pruning waste.

Beneficial associations:

• It pairs well with shade and woodland plants, particularly ferns and honesty, in a structured shade garden. Absolutely avoid planting it near grazing areas.

• Its evergreen, very dense foliage provides one of the best winter shelters and nesting sites in the garden, highly sought after by songbirds.
• Its arils feed blackbirds and thrushes, which digest the flesh and excrete the seed intact, ensuring its dispersal.
• An old yew hedge shelters remarkably rich insect and spider life.

Uses:

• Evergreen hedges, topiary, formal gardens and bonsai. Its very dense, elastic wood has historically been associated with bow-making.

Symbolism:
Planted in cemeteries for centuries, the yew is associated with eternity, death and resurrection. Among the Celts, its ability to regenerate from its own hollow trunk made it the tree of immortality.

Harvesting your own seeds:
Harvest the fully red arils in autumn — wearing gloves —, crush them in a little water and rinse to extract the black seed. Dry it before the long stratification process. Clearly label the packet, as these seeds are highly toxic. See storing your seeds.
